IT IS THE ART TO TELL STORIES!!
It consists on communicating and expressing something through the words,
the voice and the gestures.
According with my experience during three years like an English teacher
at school, I realised that students learnt of an easy way if we teach them
using materials and resources to develop their motivation, in this case,
telling tales or short stories.
It is not only an easy way to learn for them, if not it is a way to
keep in mind the knowledge and contents for everything, not only to pass the
exam.
The last year, my students of the second cycle of Primary Education, were forgetting of a continuous way what was the name of an animal which they had to learn, it was the frog. I thought in a lot of activities to remember the name, but it was imposible, therefore, I realised that if I looked for a short story about it, they could associate thetale with the animal´s name. Finally, I could feel satisfaction when I saw that it was posible, when I pronunced ''frog'', students had to imitate the animal with the voice and gestures, they were completely motivated.
I had to think different alternatives and options to teach them, because not all the students learnt of the same way.
The story:
Two frogs had lived in a village all their lives. they thought they would like to go and see the big city that was about ten miles away.
They talked about it for a long time, and at last they set off to see the city.
It was a hot day, and they soon began to feel tired. They had only gone a little way when one said to the other, "We must be nearly there. Can you see the city?"
"No," said the other frog; "but if I climb on your back I might be able to see it."
So he climbed up on the back of the other frog to see the city.
Now when the frog put up his head, his eyes could only see what was behind, and not what was in front. So he saw the village they had just left.
"Can you see the city?", asked the frog who was below.
"Yes," answered the frog who had climbed up. " I can see it. It looks just like our village."
Then the frogs thought that it was not worthwhile going any farther. They went back and told the frogs round the village that they had seen the city, and it was just like theirs.
I think that it is a good tool to work with children, so I am going to give you some steps to create a story:
1-Creation of a story where children are emotional or esthetically
identified.
2-To adequate the age of the students and the contents which they must
learn.
3-To organise the story according with a structure:
a)Description
b)Main body
c)The end.
4-To give expresivity in our gestures to create more interest in
children.
5-To change our tone of voice, it is essential to students can
differenciate the characters, movements and situations, therefore, the
entonation is very important.
6-To look for the participation and intervention of students, through
the imitation.
In conclusion, we should use more the storytelling to teach our students, because is essential that they develop their imagination using fantastic stories with a good finality.
